Do you do school visits?

Yes. I love visiting schools. I promise I won’t say anything too inappropriate to your students. They will like me.   I swear. Please e-mail me for availability and rates.

I can tailor a program to meet your needs. My favourite thing to do is to do writing workshops with Grade 11 and 12 students. These usually go over two days in sessions two weeks apart. The first day is spent talking about writing, common pitfalls, ideas, etc. Then the students are left with a project to write. The projects are e-mailed to me, then I pick four or five to “workshop” in the following session. This gives the students an idea of what writing workshops are like once they get into college or university. I do a critique of each student’s work in writing so everyone gets something out of the session.

I’m also happy to come around and do a reading and talk about myself (!) and the writing process. It's a bit of stand-up comedy, a bit of serious business, and of course a bit from my newest book or some other book that I’d rather talk about in the moment.

A sessions are always a lot of fun, too, and I’m happy to do them. Get your class to each prepare a question in advance and that way everyone gets what they want! These can be so much fun.

What grade levels are best suited for your books?

The Carly series is for kids aged 9-11 (grades 4-6). The YA books are all targeted at an audience 14+, so Grade 10 and up is most appropriate.

Will you perform for a whole gym full of kids?

Some people love doing this, but I have to admit I prefer smaller groups so that the students really get a chance to get involved, ask questions and participate. My preferred audience would be 30 or fewer students.   For the workshops, smaller groups are better.
